Obesity and its Wide Epidemic Spread

You’ve probably heard this from many different people…”Sitting in one spot for hours is not good for your health!” Of course it’s not, but we still do it anyway. Why stand when you can sit right? Everyone sits, how else will you do work?

As more people are aware of their health and how certain foods or habits are harmful to their bodies, more people are willing to take on new and healthier decisions for themselves. In this blog, we will discuss the ongoing bad habits people make and how you can start changing it.

Aside from sitting at your desk for 8+ hours a day, do you know what else is harmful? That’s right, the greasy bad foods you put in your body because you’re so tired from working all day that all you crave for at lunch is that oily hamburger from the fast food joint. This goes hand in hand with one another. With the epidemic spread of obesity increasing year by year across the nation, it is important citizens and employees of any company be aware of their health. What people don’t realize is what they’re eating are so harmful along with no proper exercise that they can die from this disease. If your job is to sit at a desk or on a computer for hours on the daily, this may be the time to think about some of the things you can change in your everyday life.

Here are some facts about obesity:

(according to NIH, Overweight and Obesity Statistics)

  2. More than 1/3rd = 35.7% are obese.
  3. More than 1 out of 20 people (6.3%( are considered “extremely obese.”
  4. Cost of deaths from obesity exceed $40 million.

Obesity not only is a problem to an individual, but it is to the employer as well. Employers are spending more money on life insurance premiums and workers’ compensation for people with obesity (Economic Costs. Obesity Prevention Source). This also causes missed days at work for the individual in wages and work not being finished for the employer. Like Forbes stated in their article, “Reuters is reporting that obesity in America is now adding an astounding $190 billion to the annual national healthcare price tag, exceeding smoking as public health enemy number one when it comes to cost.” $190 billion?! That’s a lot of money on something that can be prevented. Yes, adding a few things to your daily habits can make a big difference.

A couple things you can start doing:

  • If you’ve never worked out before, start walking or running for at least 20 minutes per day, everyday.
  • Be aware of what you eat can make a HUGE difference. Good calories vs. bad calories.
  • Start a training program or a 30 day challenge for yourself. This can be different exercises you do or cut out something harmful from your everyday eating habits. An example would be cutting out sodas and replacing it with water or organic cold pressed juices!
  • Eating more vegetables and fruits throughout the day will increase your efficiency and productivity and you will able to do work better without being tired all the time. You can replace your regular meals with juices/veggies.
  • Do a 3-day juice cleanse (we’ve got this covered for you!) to reboot your system.
  • Portion control. This will shrink your stomach size and eventually you will eat more meals throughout the day, but they will be in smaller portions. This is a big factor in losing weight.
  • Yoga! Take a look at our previous blog on Bikram Hot Yoga. If you don’t like to run or do heavy lifting, you can detox your body of toxins by doing yoga. It’s great for mental clarity as well.

Of course there are many more things people can do to help with healthy habits, what are some things you do? We’d be happy to hear some!
